The main practical difference is that a good modern alternator will make electricity at idle speed (but not all alternators will), whereas an old-fashioned generator needs to be revved up a bit above idle speed to start putting out. Other than that, a regular generator will handle all normal lighting and accessories. It won't keep up with long-term operation of an electric winch, so that could be another consideration if you have one.
