How do you install an alternator and is it worth the effort?

Quick question,

I am thinking about installing an alternator. I was thinking about upgrading to an alternator as I am upgrading my lighting and am not sure weather the generator will keep the battery charged.

Is it worth the effort? What do you need to change and what alternator is used?
