dodge 2500 vs 3500

I've finally decided to buy a new truck and I'm curious as to why the above two trucks have different towing and hauling capacities when equipped with the same engine/transmission/axles. Seems like it would have to be more than different springs. Another question, what is the consensus on the automatic transmission in these trucks, the 48RE. is it good or bad?
