I looked at this a while back and decided that unless I fell into a really good deal on a '80 diesel, that it may make more sense to just buy a '75-80 gasser (to get the D44 front end) without body rot (now there's a rare bird!) and then install a known good running diesel (4bt, 6.2, 6.5, etc). I've seen too many '80 diesels with overly proud sellers, and questionable Nissan diesels which are not cheap to rebuild.
While the '80 diesels and 4-poppers (not V8s) came with Dana 300 t-cases, the only real upside to that t-case is that it will accept 4:1 gears. But the Dana 20s were commmon in earlier years, and you can get 3:15 to 1 gears for it.
