The front main is oiled via a hole drilled from end to end, that hole is aligned with the lifter bores. The big relief in the new lifters is probably neccessary in some application, and won't do any harm in others. It will also lighten the lifter making 'valve float' and 'lifter pump-up' less likely. I'd say it's a good thing.
