No more acetylene???

I was just at the welding store complaining that a $15 bottle of oxygen is now $25 and a $45 bottle of acetylene is now $60, and the guy told me acetylene is on its way out and within a few years it won't be available at all! He claimed it was on account of environmental laws and he said gas welding is obsolete anyway, pointing to a long display of wire-feed units and saying "everybody's using those now". I couldn't believe it. Has anybody else heard this?
