Jack,
Your letter was very interesting. I have purchased many things via auction for many years (I'm only 41) and I have been extremely happy with ALL of it. Before I go to the auction, I know what I want, the condition of it, how much I would pay for it on an open market, as well as assigning a maximum price I would pay for it during the bidding. I could tell you some excellent purchases that I have made through the years. Just a tip on the iceberg; I went to a machinery auction and purchased a beautiful comparator for $950. In preparation, I found they sell on the used equipment market for no less than $4,000!! I could tell you many, many other excellent purchases but I don't want to drag on. On the other hand there are MANY things I have passed on due to the bids were over what they were woth. So in essence, one must know all about what he/she is going to purchase before the auction and they must NOT LET THE AUCTION BIDDING EXCITEMENT take over their good senses. Set the maximum and stick to it.
