bill, you don't say what you used as a resistor. years ago i did such a conversion on my power wagon, using a resistor i got from j.c. whitney. it was said to be for that very application.
resistors have power ratings, i believe (i am probably about to be set upon by electrical engineers....). my fear is your resistor can't comfortably handle the current flow it is facing.
the resistor i used worked just fine, and i don't recall it ever getting more than a bit warm. it measured approximately six inches long, and was about 3/4 inch in diameter.
