A ballooned torque comverter will take out the thrust bearing. A maladjusted clutch can do the same thing. I have forgotten how much pressure the thrust can take without damage but there is a #. Seems like it was 40 lbs. My cousin runs a NAPA machine shop and this is where I first found out about this. Usually it is GM autos that have the trouble but it can happen to any make or model. You should not have that much crank movement so It sounds like the machinist is right about the thrust. The noise explanation sounds probable also.
I don't understand what is meant by the 727 having 50 lbs pressure? Is that line pressure or something else?
