Installing a PT0 into a I Ton PW

I obtained a MU-2 winch and what I believe is the correct PTO for my 1949 slant drain
non-sychro trans. Working alone under the truck I was unsuccessful in placing the pto up into the trans side opening. Just is not much room. I have heard several tips-remove pedals or rear motor mount. This sounds like a lot for an amature like me. Any ideas? Any tried and true methods?
