There is a lot more to timing than initial/idle spec. If you are going to start fiddling with timing, might as well try for optimum results. Doing a distributor recurve will gain both performance and mileage, and it's FREE to proficient mechanics. I'm sure I went too fast for some to keep up. But my years of experience in tune-up/dyno shops may have left me with an uncommon knowledge base, and I forget how ignorant I once was too. Those whose 'timing was right' learned something now, those who weren't ready my remember some helpful tidbit when they need it later. All in the spirit of this Forum.

A vacuun gauge is a valuable diagnostic tool, but as for setting timing it won't do any better than twisting the distributor back and forth to attain maximum idle speed (which is also max vaccuum). But aren't idle conditions secondary to actual running down the road conditions.....
