Forget about horsepower Don, that's not what moves a truck, it is power (torque). The in line 6 developed more torque than any other contemporary form of engine, just look at the Cummins 6 running circles around International and Izsuzu V-8 diesels in torque ratings.
Army spec writters were looking for torque, to move men and equipment, that's why the Dodge 6 and the 230 was used, it had a proven track record for nearly 20 years before the war and wartime is not the time to take chances on untried technology when you are losing. The war planners went with proven technology and dependability. Hallmarks of Dodge since 1914.
