OT 1st Gen Cummins Question

Looked at a clean '90 Cummins Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 with 98k miles for sale. Fired right up and sounded good from the outside, but I felt quite a bit of vibration inside--transfer case lever was really shaking, ripples were visible in the rainwater that had pooled in the lined bed. Guy told me it smooths out a bit when warmed up and is fine on the road, and that the older Cummins idle rough. Is this typical?
