You had the truck VIN checked out on your end and it came up clean. Go get a title. All this other stuff going on is unsubstantiated. What you do know right now is that the truck is not reported by your police/DMV as stolen so get it legally in your name. If the past owner really did have it stolen from him then he should report it as such to legal authority.
