W is the model year designation for that era, 1941-1947.
This is like the 48-49 trucks being called B-1, the 50 trucks being called B-2, or the 51-53 trucks being called B-3, etc, etc.
More to the point, WC was the model code for 2wd 1/2 tons, and my guess is that Dodge just used the 1/2 ton model code, and added numbers to show which version it was.
It is just chance that Weapons Carrier has W and C as the first two letters.
Remember, while Dodge built MANY Weapons Carriers, it also built Ambulances, Carryalls, etc, etc, and it would not have made much sense to call them all Weapons Carriers (esp. the Ambulances!).
This is a common mistake, and it does make some sense, it just happens not to be true.
One way to check this is to look back at the pre war military 4wd trucks, the VCs. V=1940, C=1/2 ton, then you have the number codes to show what you have, VC-1 is a Command car for example.
