Winches and cables are funny. 7/16 isn't really big enough for 8,000#, but it is too big to fit on the tiny little drum. So you end up with a marginal cable no matter what you do. Most winches don't get used much so the short life is probably acceptable.
7/16" is the best compromise.
The best cable that is easy to get is 6 x 36 fiber core made of "extra improved plow steel". Galvenize is probably better than stainless. Cast on sockets are much stronger than clamps.
They make something called 6 x 42 tiller that is really better because it is so flexable.
