If its running away, for example, blown rings on a piston sucking engine oil, blown seals on the turbo oil line, either one is feeding oil to the engine. Or if it was run in a flammable atmosphere, all would keep the engine running no matter if the regualr fuel suply were shut off. The only way to stop it under the above conditions is to shut off all incoming air (Some diesels have emergency air shut down, others its a aftermarket item), or discharge a intert gas such as C02 into the intake, which is real dangerous standing next to a runaway diesel screaming faster and faster till it destructs.
It is susposed to have happened while being painted. My guess is flammable atmosphere, runaway, it was self destruction. If those were the conditions, I can understand no warantee.
