early type transmission question

I was putting my transmission together today and had a question. The manual has clear instructions for shimming the rear bearing holder with gaskets. The front has no such instructions, but has a gasket. I can't understand why the front bearing holder has a gasket - there is nothing to seal in or out - but if it did it seems you would have to put just the right number to hold the bearing tight and still close.

Any comments?
