I didn't read where the alternator was in the equasion, but since you brought it up, alternators are superior to generators off-road for one basic reason: their charging rate is independent of engine rpm. Generators must have high rpms to fully recharge a battery. When running off-road, in most situations, you are crawling or moving very slowly with very few engine rpms. An alternator works better under that scenario.
