This story starts a few weeks ago, though I suppose it really began 60 years ago. Terry in Bozrah posted here that he'd picked up an NOS WC rear fender at a military show that he didn't really need, so I contacted him about getting it. It turns out that my friend Charley (without the orange bus) was in Terry's home state of Conn. and could swing by and pick it up on his way home to Texas. In fact, Charley had been at the very same show that weekend.
So Charley picks it up and heads south into New York state. He was tooling down the Interstate when some guy 3 cars ahead of him in a Subaru goes into road rage and slams on his brakes to send a message to the guy behind him. This ripples back down the line, but the 18 wheeler behind Charley can't slow down so quickly and nails him. Charley was sent across the median, rolling 6 times and landing upside down in the oncoming lane. The car that had been in front of him was also punted by the truck and ended up head into an oncoming car. Charley unbuckled and scrambled out with tires squealing around him. Charley was the only one who didn't leave in an ambulance. He collected his possesions off the roadway, said goodbye to his ruined 4Runner, and counted his blessings. Oh, and the WC fender was in perfect shape! It arrived by rental car. Thanks Terry.
