When I worked in the soda ash industry, metallic contaminants in the soda ash were very bothersome to the glass industry. Common glass contains about 30% soda ash.
Nickel sulfide typically came from anti-sieze compounds, which we banned from our plant because they caused problems in glass manufacture.
From personal experience, PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass) glass products were much better than LOF (Libby Owens Ford) glass products.
