What's the shortest intermediate driveshaft you can build?

I am trying to squeeze a divorced auxilliary transmission in ahead of the transfer case and need to shorten up the intermediate driveshafts as much as possible. It looks like I can trim the original short shafts down to about 7". Has anyone built one shorter? Would it be possible to stick a cardan join tbetween two divorced gearboxes without a driveshaft at all?
