The gears are made with rounded leading edges. This is to provide easier engagement. If the edges aren't broken off, you can disassemble the trans completely, and sit down with them for a half hour and do some re-profiling with a Dremel tool.
As to the sloppy shifter, what usually wears is the slot in the shift lever itself. Take it apart. (Yes, working with that holding spring is a bit*h*) You will see that the pin slot is quite worn. I re welded mine with a hard face welding rod, then used a hand held grinder to restore the ball profile, and a thin 1/8" thick X 4" diameter grinding wheel to restore the slot. Check the fit on the pin often when doing the regrind.
Works like a charm, and you won't believe how easy it is to shift and find gears.
