I think you are asking whether or not you would disengage the winch with the shifter handle when under load. The answer is no. I think you would probably break the handle before it came out of gear and when it disengages you really have nothing to hold the load anymore. At least not on my Ramsey PTO but yours might be different in that department. I think some winches do have load brakes. As I read your scenario for using your winch I would say it is correct.
