Proper use of a LU4 Winch??

OK I have never used one of these befor. I know how to spool out and spool in and how to free wheel it. But my question is on the winch shifter handle I would think it is only used for no load reasons to wind the cable up and free wheel it. Do you en/gauge the handle first then use the Clutch to work the Winch when using it under load? It seems you might damage the Dogs using it any other way. Is this right? Thanks, Mark H.
