At my uncles place in Colorado, they went by the number of rings. 3 for their phone, 4 for the neighbors and so on. They always knew who was getting the call by the number of rings! ha!ha!
The "HA" or prefix was just a way to get more numbers in play as the early numbers had 5 digits. Later the numbers became full-on 7 digit numbers and the HA became 42.
