Hey there MoparNorm. What confused me was the series of numbers that I remember: the "XX on XX" thing. The numbers most people refer to such as "HAstings 2-9341" are foreign to me. My folks said that the phone number had nothing to do with the number of rings. So I did some quick searching of the ads in my 1950 County Plat Book. Here are some of the numbers I found:
Miller's Shelling Service - PHONE 15 on 17
Dunlaps Shell Service - PHONE 18 on 23
Bonnett Trucking Co. - PHONE 6 on 141
These are a sample of some of the Reynolds and Taylor Ridge phone numbers. When you get closer to the cities, the numbers changed somewhat:
Palmer Motor Company - Phone Milan 18-19
Swan & Bahnsen Lumber Co. - Phone Black 21
Sievers Electric Service - Phone 353 W1
Muscatine Seed & Supply - Phone 2799-J
Schroeder Tractor Service - Shop Phone 38R2 - Res. Phone 38
Recks Welding & Repair - Phone 6-3731
I guess it did depend upon your exchange and how far out in the "sticks" you were! ;^)
Clint
