The permit timetable is per the building code adopted by the local jurisdiction. As a general rule, all states west of the Mississippi use the same Uniformed Building Code, eastern states use a different code. Each municipality has their own ceasation of work rules and should be contacted for the exact requirements. Some rural areas, in non-siesmic areas, still have no permit requirements, but they are fast disappearing as government discovers more ways to raise fees and revenues.
