I had a long argument with a trooper in a scalehouse over this last summer. He claimed that based simply on it having 2 axles, it's GVWR HAD to be more than 26,000 lbs. I claimed that based on the military data plate, the cargo capacity HAD to be no more than 10,000. The problem is that there is no "manufacturer's" GVWR plate on it like there is on commercial trucks. Given the 13,500 empty weight of a straight M35A2, 23,500 would appear to be the GVWR. However, the lady at the courthouse would only sell me 22000 lbs of gross weight fees, since they only sell it in 2000 lb increments and they can't sell over the GVWR rating of the truck, which SHE interpreted as being 23,500 lbs. The argument at the scalehouse ended with him giving me a fix-it ticket for half a dozen other things and deciding to not force the GVWR issue.

Although the rear bogie of a deuce is clearly strong enough to carry way more than the rated load (it was designed more for cross-country flotation than gross highway load), the 9.00-20 front tires on an M35A2 (heavy multi-fuel engine) are pretty well maxed out at 5 tons load, especially if you have it well forward in the bed. I do know a guy who claims he once hauled 10 tons of wet dirt in a deuce without harm, and took it over a scale just to be sure.

So what's up Mark, are you looking at buying a deuce? By the way, I just bought our local FD's M211 brush truck, so I'm learning about M211's as well as M35s these days. So far, so good. Haven't tried the pump yet, although I did learn that a 24V electrical system does an excellent job of welding a 1/2" socket onto a 3/8" ratchet.
