Engineers provide a vital service, in the lab, most could not find dog dropping in a kennel. Notice I say most because some of the brightest people I know are engineers, and I work closely with them, even flying to various parts of the nation to assist them with my real world knowledge. I was refering to the "concrete guides" that you read and quoted without footnotes, referencing, the concrete association, soil condiitons, area of the country, concrete reinforcing, concrete psi, which code authority, etc., etc.
Raw data without experience is a dangerous thing.
Anyone who suggested 4" may or may not have enough knowledge to impart that information, either way, it was a disservice to someone who was looking for help.
The stack of mail in my e-mail inbox regarding help with concrete attests to the fact that it sunk in with some here, if not many. I arrived at the 18,000 psi by working closely with several labs and engineers over the years, using data supplied in some cases by our firm.
Sorry I touched a nerve, but I'm on a crusade to correct misinformation where ever I find it. = )
