It doesn't have to be super strong, and brazing is much less likely to crack the casting. Even still, best try to get the whole thing pretty hot, braze it, and let it cool down slowly. Use lots of flux (borax) because the cast iron will be saturated with oil. Then check the gasket surface to make sure it's still flat in both directions. If it warped, you'll crack it when you torque down the bolts.
