Dave,
Thats pretty much it. You could still put in aftermarket guages and use the 12V sending unit but in my opinion I think trying to keep the original guages is nicer. But you know what they say about opinions. My truck (which I bought about a half year ago so I'm no expert but I am learning fast)had been converted to 12v. The previous owner bought the little round guages, ground out the rectangle cut-outs that were made for the original clusters and to fit them in. Like your truck none of the guages work on electricity except the amp guage (and AMPs are AMPs regardless of voltage) and the fuel guage. My truck also had the single post for the 12V system and then it grounded to the frame. That won't work with the 6V sending unit. I bought the resistor from VPW and attached it between the ignition and the IGN post on the fuel guage. Now I am waiting for a used 6V sending unit from a friend and I should be set. If it doesn't come through then I will buy the 6v units that VPW has made for them. It sounds like you had an original tank and an aux tank and the original was canned and the AUX tank remains. You are correct in that the original had a hole in the top for the sending unit which was screwed into place by 5 screws. Ask the good folks on this forum if anyone has an extra tank and I'll bet one shows up thats not too expensive. I think the sending units (working) are much harder to find so if you don't want to waist time, just order one from VPW. You can also talk to Steve or anyone else there since they know more about these trucks than most and are very happy to share the knowledge. Or I will be glad to answer any questions whenever I am not deployed. Take care. VR, Bill J.
