Cummins, V10s are the topic, yet most folks just plain forget about the 5.2 and 5.9 engines.
We have a 96 Ram 1500 4x4 with 5.2 (318) and 5 spd. manual, 3.55 ls, it is my wife's truck.
I have pulled a WM300 with it to Pat and Wandas, and also to a hunting ranch 100 miles away. We have hauled steers around with it also.
The truck pulls with no problems, although the steep hills near Kerrville on IH 10 caused me to downshift to 3rd gear when pulling the WM300.
As far as off roading goes, I would much rather drive her truck than my Ram 2500 Diesel 4x4. It is way better off road, of course it is a half ton and not too sprung.
The truck gets about the same mpg as my Cummins does when both are unloaded, and will pull ok if necessary. Between oil changes I add 3/4 of a quart at 130K miles.
