If your alternater has 2 field terminals,make sure one is grounded.Old alts only had one,other side of field was internally grounded,newer alts have 2.A test for alt is to hook field terminal to 12 volts while metering output voltage,if alt is good it will whine and voltage will go up to 16+ volts,engine should slow down from the load.
