1977 M-880 voltage/amp problem

I know that you guys dont do this year model much but I didnt know who else to ask. As I am driving around My amp gauge showes around 10-15 then all of a sudden it will peg out over 60 and my lights are real bright, then it goes back. The time that this lastes is never the same, sometimes a few seconds and sometimes several minutes. If it stays on too long I swell smoke and have to shut the truck off to reset it. I have a 100 amp alternator and a 60 amp guage. Any help would be great. Thanks.
