I had the same problem just a couple of months ago.
My oil pump was off by 1 or 2 teeth on the cam and since the dist rides in a groove in the end of the oil pump shaft, my timing was way out of adjustment.
I pulled the minor adjustment screw off and set the major th a center position on the dist. Then with one hand pushing down on the starter lever, and the other hand turning the dist. I got it to a point where it ran really good. From there I was able to figure out which way to turn the oil pump to get everything back in alignment.
