I was pulled over recently because the officer thought the right tail light on my M105 trailer was burned out. I had never really given it much thought but it turns out it doesn't have a tailight on the right. This is a 1951 trailer with the old small metal and glass light assemblies (not the modern "composite" lights). The left and right assemblies are different. Both sides have turn signals, brake lights, and blackout lights, but in non-blackout mode only the left one has a tail light. The wiring harness doesn't even have a wire for a (non-brake) tail light on the right side.
I told the officer that the trailer wasn't built with a right-hand tail light and at that point (standing alongside the highway) I didn't see what I could do about it. He said that state law requires two tail lights on all vehicles and trailers. I told him I'd try to figure something out when I got home. He was nice about it and didn't go looking for more trouble, but my question is, is it sufficient for an old vehicle to have whatever kind of lights it was built with (similar to the seatbelt situation), or do they have to be upgraded to modern specs?
