What's the trick to downshifting?

I put 18 miles on the 1946 pw today. It was the truck's first time on the road in 3 years. I could not downshift. It has the unsyncronized transmission and I was double clutching but just kept grinding. I really only need to get from fouth to third most of the time. Thanks for any help
