I have a pic of my beater M3H4 w/boom at:

Straight boom, same basic idea. I don't think strain on the cable is as big an issue as strain on the suspension...unless you have stiff-legs/outriggers, or block up the frame when lifting. I like being able to drive around with something lifted, poor man's swing boom. I installed this one forward of the rear axle a litttle.
This is for a bigger truck than a PW? Even so 24' seems...ummm...long, it's nice to lift something high if you're building a structure, otherwise 12'-14' high has been ideal for my mechanical projects.
I'm getting rid of this boom if any one wants it. It was originally used at the Portland airport's shop. I paid $100 for it, and would let it go for that. It's two piece, extendable, not sure of the weight...heavy. Needs to be on at least a 1 1/2 ton and it's designed to lift straight up, not pull from the sides or front, otherwise the cable slips out of the sheave and you have a real hassle. It worked good building my place but now I'm going to find a knuckle boom, or at least something that rotates.
