The 12 valve Cummings engines used in the Dodge trucks is a direct injection configuration. The injector, cylinder, piston looks like a gas engine spark plug set up. The Navstar Ford uses and the Duramax Chevy uses have pre-combustion chambers. The injector does not squirt the fuel directly into the piston cylinder but into a small seperat chamber where combustion starts and then the mixture expands into the cylinder area to finish burning. The pre-combustion arrangenment is much quieter; however the direct injection arrangement is more efficient; hence better mileage.
