Tried to put Rod instead of cable on Brake?

Spent a few hours tring to get the right bend in the rod last night for the Emergency Brake. It seems after you get all the right bends in it then it won't slide between the transfer case and the frame? I got it perfect but needed to bend it up to line up with the Brake lining linkage and that is when it woud not fit?? How did you guys get the rod to fit? I had to put a cable back in. That U-Bolt clamp is a bear to get out when the cab is on too not much room for a wrench. I was tring to use a 3/8 inch rod, dose it need to be bent after it is slide in? Mark H.
