You should be getting the impluse for the timinglight from the spark plug wire and 12 volts from the battery. The type of ignition should not affect your light if I am correct. The timing light does not care how the spark get started in the plug wire just that it is there.

A simple test is to try it on another vehicle where you have seen it work before.
