Every sears electric tool I've ever owned that had a universal (brush-type) motor in it has failed in a spectacular burst of smoke and flame. That includes a weed eater, drill, and "skil" saw. The cheap "chicago electric" tools that harbor freight sells have survived more abuse and cost less than half of sears.

As of sears hand tools, they are decent mid-range tools, but they've tried to cheat me twice on the warrantee. First the clerk tried to tell me that a tap wrench wasn't really a "hand tool" and so didn't have a lifetime warrantee. The second time, I tried to get a top-of-the-line ratchet handle replaced and the manager insisted I had to choose from a draw full of rebuilt cheaper models. After some wrangling he did give me new wrench of the same model as the stripped one.

I know sears used to be better. I still use my dad's 1950s sears socket set and have never had a problem. His 1950 sears table saw still runs and cuts smooth as glass, especially compared to the new chinese ones.
