I had a problem like this on a Chevy once, and it was because they gave me the wrong pressure plate assembly at the parts store. The difference was the spring fingers stuck out (away from engine) farther than on the correct one. I put it on anyway, thinking maybe my old pressure plate's fingers had gone soft with age or something. Had to take it apart and swap it out with the right one, which the parts store's computer insisted was not the right one for that year & engine. Don't know what kind of rig you're working on or if there were two slightly different pressure plates that fit it, but it's worth comparing the new one closely to the old one.
