Everyone seems to have an opinion,so heres mine.
There are only 2-3 reasons a person might go to taller tires, looks, lift, or engine
rpm reduction at highway cruising speeds. You would have to use 1st gear to startoff with, your axle shafts (as well as the rest of the drive train)would be put under more stress and be more subject to breakage if in the right situation and they would usually cost more.
Repowering would only exert more force (torque) to the stress points.
We thought we had found the answer to our deliema with the introduction of the NV4500HD
tranny but its design is wrong for our purposes in the WDX-WM300 PWs. Had our tough little NP420 been designed with a OD, we would just about have the perfect situation.
I see the dennen or someother aux. OD unit as being our only real answer to our gearing problem.
The best we could do is to settle for the 4:89 gearsets and be content with approx. 50mph. 2-gearsets would cost about as much as the dennen OD unit kit, which in my opinion, would be a better choice.
Everyone must weigh the cost and drawbacks of everything involved and make a decision based on what suits them the best. Sometimes only money spent and things tried can lead one to know the best possible solution for a given situation.
