Skunk Works by Ben Rich.
Ben was Kelly Johnson's successor. I have owned this book ever since it came out in the middle eighties and re-read it every couple of years.
Wish I understood more about thermodynamics. According to the book those giant cone like devices at the front of the engine would move out several feet when the SR-71 was at mach 3+ creating a shockwave that compressed the incoming air for the engine. Supposedly thy were responsible for 80% of the thrust capability of the engine.
