Subject:   Two problems, maybe more update.

Message:   Finally got the no-crank part solved. Went to an old yard early this morning looking for another starter. Way back in the yard where I have never gone I found a 64? D300 school bus with the 318. Pulled the starter and noticed it still had a reman sticker. Happened to look up at the block while underneath the bus and noticed the engine had a reman sticker. What a shame. That engine had been rebuilt but probably no good now since it has been sitting in the back row for how knows how many years.

"New" starter worked like a new one out of the truck but not installed. Tested the original out of the truck for the heck of it and it worked like a new one. Cleaned all the wire terminals and still no joy. Finally cleaned the battery terminals and cables and the truck cranked over. Someone told me to clean the terminals. Why didn't I listen? Ended up removing and reinstalling the starter 4 times.

But the igition is still not working. I performed all the tests someone mentioned and got all good values. Problem seems twofold. I can detect no voltage at the distributor...those 2 wires. At the coil with the key in the RUN position I got 4 volts at the positive terminal and 1 volt at the negative terminal. This is where I stopped working on the truck. Just had too much fun to continue.

I also swapped out the control unit with another used one and nothing changed. I wonder if the electronic voltage regulator could somehow be causing this no-spark condition?

Anyone want a free starter? Not a 3-bolt but a 2-bolt gear reduction type off a newer model. I have no use for it and hate to toss it but that is what will soon happen now I know it will not work on the old Dodge.
