Power Wagon Goodwill Cross Country Trip 2008
I think this is day 5 now. It's been a great trip so far and the old Power Wagon only burned a half a quart of oil the entire trip so far!!
I'm in Chicago! Today I started In Lincoln, NE, had lunch in Omaha and met with soopernaut in Des Moines. He has a 70 Sweptline (pretty clean) project that he is in the process of swapping out frames on. His plan is to attach it a 77 frame and give his rig better suspension, disk brakes and power steering. He's working out the challenges of the 3" frame length difference. Bill is a pretty smart guy. He has a cool house too with room to erect a bigger workshop in the side yard... he also has a basketball net but when I challenged him for a quick game... he said he has no ball. LOL! I'll come back and visit him next time I'm in his neighborhood and go for a ride in his completed 70! I'll bring him a basketball!!
I wished it were daytime when I passed the Mississippi River, darn. Driving for so many hours at a time gives ya time to think, reflect and hone unusual skills. For example. I am becoming a steering wheel thumb drumming expert. Nothin' better than cool tunes on a long road. I can also turn the wheel pretty good with my knees. This comes in handy when opening a bottle of water while on the phone. I went nearly through 2 cases of water so far on this trip!!!
It's not easy talking on the phone in a Sweptline going 70mph! Pretty noisy!! Aside from the noise, the Power Wagon is pretty comfortable and handles very well. I feel safe and the unit as a whole is very tight and responsive.
I now have a renewed appreciation for big rig diesel pushers. Peterbilts, Whites, Kenworths, Internationals, Freightliners and Macks all march in neat rows down the highway safely and courteously bringing life's supplies to our communities. I remember a few days ago going up the Rocky Mountains when visibility was terrible. Fog, rain, winding steep grades and sometimes no guard rail made me nervous. I just would stay behind a big rig and they led the way!
Tomorrow is the final day for driving the Power Wagon as I should hit Buffalo by nightfall. I would love to go to Ohio for the Mopar gathering and meet Fish but I am going through the north side of Lake Erie right to Buffalo. New owner is eager beaver to receive it so I cannot stretch out another day!! I'll post some picks of the rig at it's final destination with the new owner!!
G'night, FrankyB
