Day 6:
I started the day off with a swim just outside of Chicago. Lazed around for a while and started in toward Canada. I thought a bit about what MoNo said above about passports and decided to duck under Lake Erie and stay in the U.S. Besides, I'm on vacation and don't want think about kilometers, liters and bomb sniffers... it's about the same distance south of the lake anyway!!
I met some more nice people. In particular, a nice family from Iowa traveling as well. They adopted me for an hour and took me to lunch! In retrospect, I must have looked pretty hard up driving that Power Wagon when strangers offer to feed me. LOL...
I met some other kids in Ohio that wreck cars as a hobby. Picture below is Sheldon and Bubba. They look for big 4 door Impalas, Electras and the likes, swap out the engines, rears and beef up driveshafts and run 'em in demolitions. They informed me that the strongest all time car is the Imperial land yacht and most places ban them!! Can't beat a Chrysler!!! They invited me to come back in a week and a half to watch them perform but I'll be in Nantucket by then.
I sparked up a conversation with a girl that worked in a gift shop in Pennsylvania and she took her break to continue chatting with me. How do you get a pretty girl to kiss you? Just ask!! Hey, I had nothing to loose and I'm way past ever embarrassing myself. I wanted to get a picture of her but I didn't want to lose the moment.
Gear banging down the road I entered New York State. A sudden lump in my throat and a feeling of sadness came over me. I knew this was the last stretch of road for me in the old 68. Many thoughts ran through my head. I didn't want to give her over to someone else... "well maybe Mike won't want her!", I thought. Hey, it's not perfect... he might change his mind!!!. She's pretty perfect to me and I wouldn't change a thing on her! The truck drove beautifully for nearly 3,000 miles straight and has shown no signs of fatigue. Not one mechanical problem. I never had to reach into my toolbox even for a minute. I only brought a sledge hammer and a roll of duct tape anyway!!! It'd be nice to take the Power Wagon to Cape Cod to visit my brother. His kids would love it!! I'll probably have to turn it over to Mike and rent a car for the remainder of my vacation then fly back.
So, it's pretty late and I'm at a motel in Buffalo, NY. I'll give Hobcoble a call tomorrow and see if he wants to accompany me in dropping off the rig to his fellow Buffalonian Sweptliner. Mike the new owner is having a BBQ early evening and invited me and John if John wants to go.
Good night all and thanks for reading my ramblings!!! Tomorrow I'll post the result if MJike decides to keep her or not and showcase the 68's new residence and a pic of the new owner.
