John, JimmieD's system works well if you don't drop any of the tumblers while wiping them into the bag. If you want to try it yourself it's really not that difficult. First off, you must have a set of tumblers that match the key. There's not that many different ones so you are probably in good shape.
Start by matching the rounded tumblers with the spring loaded tumblers. match up one of each to form sets that are approximately the same length. You should have five sets. The tumblers that are rounded on both ends go in first. Put the key in the slot with no tumblers and turn it slightly. You will see that it is a cylinder that turns in the housing. Now turn it back to where you can see the holes. With key still in, find a rounded tumbler that will drop onto the hole and come exactly to the edge of the inner cylinder. Do this with all five holes. If your key didn't fit before you probably won't have the exact ones you need. You can get away with leaving out one, maybe even two, tumblers but the more you leave out, the greater possibility that a different key will open the doors. When you get as many as you can installed, make sure the key will still turn. Assuming it will you can now start putting in the spring loaded tumblers. use the springloaded tumbler that you matched to the rounded one.
When you get the tumblers in make sure it will still turn. If it won't keep trying combinations of tumblers until it works. See, nothing to it.
I made these pics when I was re-setting a new lock to match my existing key. |
